Getting the assembly right first time
Assembling furniture is easy to overcomplicate: a missing part or a wardrobe built in the wrong spot causes more than one headache. With these tips, right first time.
Check all the parts are there
Before you start, open the boxes and check the parts and hardware against the instructions. Discovering a fitting is missing halfway through means stopping and going back to the shop.
Have the basic tools to hand: screwdrivers, an Allen key (though they usually come with one), a rubber mallet and a spirit level.
Assemble near its final spot
A big wardrobe or tall shelving unit is a nightmare to manoeuvre through hallways and doors once built. Assemble them as close as possible to where they’ll end up.
Measure the width of doors and hallways and the ceiling height beforehand: some pieces, once built, no longer fit or can’t be stood up.
Anchor anything tall to the wall
Wardrobes, shelving and tall chests of drawers must be fixed to the wall. It’s not optional: it’s the main safety measure, especially if there are children at home.
We anchor with the right system for each wall type (plasterboard, brick, concrete), which is where a lot of people go wrong.
Tip: keep the instructions and spare hardware in a bag inside one of the piece’s own drawers. If you ever take it apart for a move, you’ll be grateful.
